Medical Laboratory Technology

Medical Laboratory Technology (MLT) is a branch of Science that deals with the diagnosis, treatment and prevention of diseases using clinical laboratory tests.

Medical Lab Technicians performs certain tests on human body fluids such as cerebrospinal fluid, blood, stool, urine, sputum, synovial fluid and peritoneal fluids as well as other specimens. They prepare specimens for analysis, use equipment to locate microorganisms or artifacts in the tissue specimen, monitor tests and procedures, analyze the chemical content of fluids, match blood for transfusions, and test for drug levels in the blood.

Some of the core subjects present in Medical Lab Technology curriculum are listed below:

  • Human Anatomy and Physiology
  • Intro to Microbiology, Haematology, Biochemistry
  • Phlebotomy and Biomedical Waste Management
  • Clinical Pathology, Histopathology and Cytology
  • Microbial Physiology, Metabolism
  • Blood Banking, Serology and Immunology
  • Bacteriology
  • Bio-chemistry Metabolism
  • Genetics, Parasitology and Virology
  • Endocrinology, Tumour and Cancer Markers

The scope has expanded with a number of opportunities have been on the rise. A number of Medical Laboratory Technicians find employment in Pathology labs, Blood Bank, Research labs, Pharmaceuticals,Hospitals and even a career in Education Field. After getting sufficient experience one can open Pathology labs / Collection centre under the guidance of a Pathologist.

Initially a Lab Technician can easily get Rs.12000/- to Rs.20,000/- monthly salary which increases afterwards depending upon the Hospitals / Diagnostics centre, knowledge and experience of an individual.
